Personal safety when undertaking a DIY floor sanding project
Although it’s generally advisable to hire a professional floor sanding contractor to carry out extensive wood flooring refinishing projects, many people like to try the DIY route first. However, floor sanding and restoration can be fraught with danger for the unwary.
Here are a few tips on how to stay safe while undertaking a floor sanding job.
Ear defenders/ear plugs
Even the small floor sanding machines that you can pick up from your local tool hire shop can produce a lot of noise. If you are left without adequate protection for prolonged periods, this can give you a very nasty headache or even damage your hearing for good.
Protect your hearing by wearing ear defenders or ear plugs while you’re working. This will also prevent sanding dust and debris from getting into the sensitive structures of your ears and causing irritation.
Dust mask
When you are sanding or stripping old varnish or paint from a wooden floor, much dust and debris is created. You should always work with the windows and external doors open so that the work space is well-ventilated, but it is also advisable to wear a disposable dust mask.
Breathing in dust particles can cause painful coughing and could even cause a chest infection, so prevention is the best course of action. In addition, some floor finishes can contain nasty chemicals and solvents that you really don’t want to be breathing in.
Goggles
A tiny speck of dust or a fragment of wood could leave you with a damaged eye and weeks of discomfort. To keep your eyes protected from dust and debris generated while sanding, always wear goggles.
Gloves
Always wear gloves when applying floor finishes. Some of these products contain high concentrations of solvent that can cause skin irritation. Gloves will also protect your skin from damage and dehydration during hand-sanding.
Knee pads
Finishing work such as edge sanding and repairing minor blemishes to the wood can mean working on your knees for extended periods. Wearing knee pads can help to prevent your knees from becoming bruised and sore, making the fiddly aspects of your project more comfortable and less onerous.
